TPT NOW Partnership with FBI wins National Award

Four Other Twin Cities PBS Projects Were National Award Finalists

SAINT PAUL, MN (September 26, 2022) – Twin Cities PBS (TPT) is proud to announce that the TPT NOW team won a 54th Public Media Award (PMA) from the National Education Telecommunications Association (NETA) for their hate crime education partnership with the FBI, and four other TPT projects were finalist for awards. The TPT NOW-FBI campaign produced radio and television PSAs and information graphics distributed on social media and television to help audiences better understand what a hate crime is and how to report one. The project was selected as the best National Project in the Community Engagement category. This work was made possible by a team of linguists and partners led by Managing Director Lillian McDonald that included: Sydney Gisvold, Maren Machles, Kate Westlund- Tovsen, Pa Lee, Leo Espinoza, Hibo Guled, Veronica Jaralambedes, Sanni Brown-Adefope, Univision MN, Hmong TV, Somali TV, and TPT NOW.  

The award was presented at the NETA conference last week and recognizes the significant impact of the campaign, which the FBI credits with a 32% increase in hate crime reporting across Minnesota, because community members felt more comfortable reporting to the FBI. 

Four other TPT projects were recognized as national finalists by NETA for PMAs: 

  • Bring Her Home in the Cultural Feature category
  • Relish in the Digital Media category
  • The Baldies in the Historical Feature category
  • “Life is a Highway” (car donation promo) in the Promotion category
