TPT welcomes interns to the station every summer. Interns contribute to station efforts across multiple departments. This year our interns are working on history productions, educational outreach and programming, and marketing and communications. Learn more about them below.
Ella Arvidson, Ready to Learn Intern
Gustavus Adolphus College
Elementary Education Major
Favorite PBS Show: Arthur
Why TPT? I love watching PBS and adore the work that TPT did! I wanted to see different educational opportunities there that weren’t in the classroom.
What would your PBS show be? Gus Asks Why! – A children’s show about a dog that is curious about the world, asks questions, and finds the answer.
What else should TPT members know about you? I grew up watching TPT, so it is so cool to see the work behind the scenes!
Damenica Ellis, History Intern
Howard University
Journalism Major
Favorite PBS Show: Wild Kratts, Arthur, and the Magic School Bus.
Why TPT? I applied to TPT because I had the opportunity to learn about the field I want to get into, and TPT was a staple in my household growing up. I knew it was a good fit.
What would your PBS show be? Brain Wave
Sabrina Fluegel, History Intern
University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
Hispanic Linguistics PhD, Spanish & Portuguese Studies
Favorite PBS Show: Finding Your Roots. The show has been an extremely helpful resource for me in the exploration of my family’s Black history, helping me to navigate the discovery of family members I didn’t know growing up. That is, watching Finding Your Roots has been a supportive and validating reminder that my family is not alone in “finding our roots” much later in life!
Why TPT? My PhD studies focus on what I call “the language of media”—more specifically, my research analyzes the intersection of language, culture, society, and media representation to understand how media reflects larger societal issues. Before this internship with PBS, I spent most of my digital media career studying and producing media, particularly in the social media space. That said, I wanted to make a career shift towards educational public media to broaden the focus of my research and media experience, while simultaneously learning from experts at TPT!
What would your PBS show be? Minnesota’s Hidden Black History. The show would tell the story of my hall-of-fame grandfather who lost connection to his children through transracial adoptions, and how our process of discovery and reconnection has unfolded. More broadly, the show would focus on wider issues of transracial adoptions in Minnesota following historic moments like Loving v. Virginia and the Civil Rights Act of 1968.
What else should TPT members know about you? If you’re interested in learning more about the “language of media” as related to issues of culture, race, and society, find my work (including research publications) at sabrinafluegel.com.
Na Nguyen, Ready to Learn Intern
Macalester College
International Studies, Data Science, and Educational Studies Major
Favorite PBS Show: Barney
Why TPT? Education media is a novel (and excellent) tool to bridge the gap between children, technology, and the world in which we live. TPT has been making strides in this area and I just cannot-not be a part of that!
What would your PBS show be? Don’t Yuck My Yum: a show in which school children showcase their lunches from different countries and cuisines and talk about their backgrounds.
What else should TPT members know about you? I was born in Russia, raised in Vietnam, have traveled to 10+ countries and states, and am currently living in Minnesota.
Truong Vu, Marketing/Communications Intern
University of Minnesota Twin Cities
Marketing Major
Favorite PBS Show: America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston
Why TPT? Their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Series like That Got Weird provide a platform to share real stories of racism that conventionally go unheard.
What would your PBS show be? Where to Next?
What else should TPT members know about you? I am a huge movie and tv buff. If you need recommendations on what to watch? I’m your guy!
