Hey, Campers!
Today, we’re going to learn about the different sounds animals make and how they use those sounds to communicate with one another. We will also compare animal sounds to some of our favorite musical instrument and discover what they have in common.
Your camp counselor will guide you through the activities below! To hear some of these sounds in real life, explore your neighborhood or visit a local zoo like the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory or Minnesota Zoo.
WATCH
Musical Menagerie
Meet some incredible zoo friends that swing and swoop high above the ground from branch to branch and tree to tree. Then, listen for the dialogue in the music, like the dialogue that gibbons have with each other!

MAKE
Although very dangerous, the rattle snake is a natural musician. Follow these instructions and create your won Toilet Paper Maracas. Then see if you can mimic the sound of North Americas biggest viper.

The Desert Speaks
Discover how bats use sound to navigate their environment, talk to each other, and find food.

What did you learn? Have your child draw a picture of a bat using sound to hunt its prey.

PLAY
Head over to Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and stop by the music shop. This fun interactive game lets you try a variety of different instruments. Have your child listen for any instrument that sounds like an animal call.
