William Rowe - Woodcarver

Educators' Guide

Writing/Essay/Journal
William Rowe says he knows in his head what his carving is going to look like before he even begins. Write about a time when you were (or were not) able to accomplish something exactly as you had planned. What contributed to your success or lack of success?

Activity
Make your own simple carving using a large bar of soap and a plastic knife or a Popsicle stick. You can use a toothpick for details. Sketch a simple drawing on paper and then transfer it onto one side of the soap. Pay attention to how easy or difficult it is to make the carving resemble the drawing you started out with.
