Objectives: Rooted in the traditions of basket making, Mary Giles’ work has evolved into sculptural pieces inspired by nature. Learn about the creation and use of symbols in her work and create your own.

Tools/Resources: Paper, pencils, markers (as available).

Activity

1) Watch the segment and discuss:

a. Where does Mary Giles find inspiration?

2) Observe your environment, what kind of wildlife, buildings or landmarks surround you?

3) Choose one element and make it into a simple symbol (tree, bird, bridge etc).

a. On another sheet of paper use that symbol only to create a larger representation of your community.

i. How did you use your symbol to create something new?
ii. What were the challenges of being limited to one symbol?
iii. Were there any surprises or benefits to being limited in this way?
iv. Were you able to communicate your intention?
