Guante: Cartpusher

Writing/Essay/Journal
Guante is a spoken word and hip hop artist, National Poetry Slam champion, social justice activist and educator. In Cartpusher, he explores working-class identity while describing the job of a grocery store cart pusher. He passionately and angrily talks about not being noticed or acknowledged by other people. At the end he says, “Remember, when they look right through you, you’re still there.”

Describe a time when you felt like others saw right through you as if you didn’t exist. Why do you think this happened, and how did it make you feel?

Activity
Make a list of who you consider “invisible” in our society. Write a poem that expresses your feelings about those people or groups of people. Practice reciting your poem with emotion and then perform it for a classmate.
