Writing/Essay/Journal
Gadu Doushin is a practitioner of the contemporary Japanese art form of Butoh. Contrary to western dance forms that emphasize strength and gracefulness, butoh highlights vulnerability and weakness. Gadu says he likes butoh because it allows each person to resonate with what’s around them and to discover connections between the outside world and their emotions.

Write about an activity that makes you feel connected with other people and the world around you.

Activity
Gadu implores the audience to enjoy whatever feelings they experience when watching butoh, even if it’s feelings of discomfort, sadness or fear.

Discuss in groups the value of letting oneself explore feelings beyond happiness or joyfulness. Can happiness exist without sadness? Does Gadu seem like a happy person in his interview?
