Writing/Essay/Journal
Colin Johnson coins the word maximalist to contrast himself to the Minimalist Movement in art, which shows only basic shapes and colors to represent reality.

Pick a subject and make a “word collage” by filling all the space on a sheet of computer paper with words and phrases that describe that subject.

Activity
Study Colin’s large U.S. map piece. Draw an outline of your state and make your own collage map on a state level. Fill the state outline with words, images, drawings, color and/or 3-D objects. Make sure your work reflects the diversity of what you know and feel about your state.

Be prepared to share why you chose which elements you did to fill in your map. Now compare your map with your classmates’. Based on your maps, do you have similar notions of your community?
