Writing/Essay/Journal
Carolyn Halliday uses non-traditional materials to knit her sculptures. Although she’s not afraid of risk and her methods are experimental, she says that, “the quiet repetition of a stitch is central to my existence.”

Write about something that is central to your existence. Is it something repetitive like the knitting of stitches, or is it something spontaneous and abstract?

Activity
Carolyn uses dried animal gut as parchment to write out Darwin’s ideas of evolution. Identify a scientific idea you want to express and then find a material that magnifies that idea. Experiment in combining words and the material to make a piece of art reminiscent of Carolyn’s.
