About Stage to Screen: Historic Theaters of the North

Pull back the curtain on the colorful history of Northern Minnesota’s most storied theaters in this special documentary from WDSE-WRPT Public Television. “Stage to Screen: Historic Theaters of the North” looks back to the earliest years of settlement in the region, when hard working lumberjacks and miners came to town for some entertainment. From the Iron Range towns of Virginia and Hibbing, to Superior Street in Duluth, theaters large and small, lavish and plain opened to serve the growing population. “Stage to Screen” recalls some of the theaters that have faded into history, and others that are still vibrant today. Experience the transition from live theater performances to silent movies and then to “talking pictures”. While many historic theaters were shuttered and eventually torn down, some remain, hidden in plain sight, hoping for new life as cultural and arts centers.
