The University of Minnesota has been at the forefront of the battle against stem rust since the 19th Century. Elvin Stakman was a leader in creating wheat varieties with built-in resistance to stem rust. Without resistance, "there would be no wheat crop." Following in Stakman's footsteps were scientists such as Norman Borlaug and Bent Skovmand.
