When recording a song, different parts are recorded at different times. Although her voice is not being recorded, Alison must sing well so that her bass player and drummer can record their best work. If you are doing something that “doesn’t count,” do you still do your best work? Does it matter if you are helping someone else do their best work?

Growing up, singer Alison Scott listened to music that none of her friends did; music from Motown. Scott says that her ‘soul’ comes from her unique musical tastes. Think of something that is unique to you, different from your friends, and create a piece based in that uniqueness.
