Have mercy! There will be a second season of the American PBS drama! Mercy Street will be back in 2017 with another 6-episode season. If you haven’t watched the first season, you have plenty of time to catch-up on this quality show (seriously, 6 hours isn’t even considered binge-watching anymore).
When the finale aired and I was left craving more. I am truly invested in these characters—the good and the bad—and I am excited to see what’s in store for them. The last episode did a great job setting up possible storylines for its sophomore season, especially with the various relationships. Whether they’re romantic, platonic, with family or others—here are the relationships I want to see develop and possibly crumble in season 2 (sorry Frank and Emma). Spoilers ahead!
Emma Green and Chaplain Hopkins
These two shared a sweet moment in the season finale (tears were wiped from the face and sparks were a-flying) and I say go for it! It was hinted at during the entire season—take some action! Yes, Emma (Hannah James) is still—technically—with Frank, but she didn’t meet him at 4 o’clock, so either her Apple Watch was broken or Frank isn’t her top priority. If Frank were to become an actual dentist it might be a possibility, but if Emma ever finds out what Frank’s really up to then she’s probably going to put a kibosh on that relationship and Chaplain Hopkins (Luke Macfarlane) will be there to console her.
Samuel Diggs and Aurelia Johnson
Pretty sure everyone wants to be with Samuel (McKinley Belcher III). How could you not?! We’ll have to wait in line because he and Aurelia (Shalita Grant) MUST get together. He risked his life sticking up for her against Bullen, saved her from bleeding out, and found Aurelia’s mother and son (swoon and a half). Aurelia was all set to go to Boston, but now that her family is reunited and Bullen is out of the picture maybe they will stay in Alexandria and give this new family life a shot. I don’t think Mercy Street is all about that happily ever after, but maybe they can live happily throughout a few episodes of next season. Plus, I think Dr. Foster might be cool with having Samuel as an apprentice—who knows, those two could even become friends.
Nurse Phinney and Dr. Jed Foster
These two have had many “Will they, won’t they?” moments during the entire season, but especially the last scene of the finale. The camera zoomed out and they didn’t make the moves on each other and I’m totes cool with that choice. Too many shows lose their sparkle when the main characters get together too quickly. They have such great on-screen chemistry, when both flirting and fighting. There are sure to be some awkward moments between Mary (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Jed (Josh Radnor) because of this sexual tension—like bumping into each other in close quarters or new love interests.
Frank, Alice and The Knights of the Golden Circle
Love prevailed when Frank (Jack Falahee) jumped on the fuse of the bomb meant for the hospital. I can’t see the Knights of the Golden Circle being too happy that he failed his mission and there will be backlash—but now that his bae’s sister, Alice (AnnaSophia Rob), is involved they might cut him some slack—key word is “some”. Frank didn’t have much interaction with anyone last season except for Emma, and I see him and Alice bonding over the fact that Emma’s pulling away and the loss of Tom (Alice’s boyfriend and Frank’s biffle). If this relationship forms it will definitely create an interesting dynamic between Alice and her sister.
Final Thoughts
Second seasons usually bring in some newbies and it will be nice to see new doctors, nurses, soldiers and even a villain—with Bullen out, Dr. Hale just isn’t evil enough. Not only does Mercy Street provide great historical context and an accurate look at medical procedures of the time, they are focused on developing these characters and their relationships, which is why I will come back for more.
