From Rewire — public media with a twist.
Calling all history buffs! If you’re not familiar with American Experience, it’s TV’s most-watched history series, bringing to life stories of American history in one-hour documentaries on topics ranging from Annie Oakley to Silicon Valley. The always-fascinating series is premiering all-new episodes on Tuesday with the classic American true-crime tale of Bonnie & Clyde.
The show takes a hard look at the real-life history of the star-crossed lovers/criminal masterminds that captured America’s imagination over 70 years ago. The “Making a Murderer” of the 1930s if you will. We recommend you give it a gander, especially if you were a fan of the 1967 movie with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
As we all know, the story of Bonnie & Clyde ends with an epic (and bloody) showdown between the law and the outlaws. Here are seven other American Experience docs that tell the story of America’s (and Hollywood’s) obsession with “cops & robbers” from both sides of the law.
Cops
Wyatt Earp (aka Kurt Russell):
The man remembered for bringing law and order to the Wild West.
G-Men – The Rise of J. Edgar Hoover (aka Leonardo DiCaprio):
The lawman who created the FBI and brought down organized crime.
You’ll have to check your local PBS listings for this one. It hasn’t made its way into the digital world, yet…
Robbers
Jesse James (aka Brad Pitt):
Robin Hood hero or cold-blooded killer? Find out the true story of this Civil War era outlaw.
Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid (aka Paul Newman and Robert Redford):
Not your average outlaws, the Wild Bunch gang takes a smart, methodical approach to crime.
Billy the Kid (we’re waiting, Hollywood):
An old-west gunfighter who epitomized the ‘outlaw of the American west’ ethos.
Era of Gangsters:
The unlikely criminal heroes who captured the American imagination during the Great Depression.
Public Enemy #1 (aka Johnny Depp):
Tells the story of legendary outlaw John Dillinger
