Joe Dowling arrived in the Twin Cities in 1995 to lead Guthrie Theater in its production of classic repertoire and contemporary work. During his tenure, Guthrie Theater has become a national center for theater arts and theater education.
In 2006 when Guthrie had outgrown its original space near the present day Walker Art Center, Dowling set out to construct a new building along the Mississippi River. Designed by architect Jean Nouvel, Guthrie Theater expanded to feature a thrust stage for classic work, a proscenium arch theater for more contemporary work, a black-box studio to present new work and state-of-the-art facilities to support the work of the artisans and technicians who make Guthrie Theater plays visually spectacular.
Dowling is most proud of the BFA Actor Training Program, which combines the academic excellence of the University of Minnesota and the professionalism of Guthrie Theater to train future generations of actors.
Joe Dowling will have been Guthrie Theater’s Artistic Director for 20 years when he retires in 2015.
