Drury Brennan's calligraphy creations are inspired by graffiti and improvisation than text
Inspired by graffiti and the aesthetic grace of Asian calligraphy, Drury Brennan’s calligraphy creations are more improvisation than text. Brennan transitioned from jazz drummer to photographer to ceramist before settling on calligraphy as a medium, but it was a childhood spent in Los Angeles that inspired his calligraphic work more than any of these other practices. The artistic liberation found in a graffiti yard near his home stood in stark contrast to a the traditional hallowed white halls of art galleries with revered famous works and hushed voices, a counterpoint that has launched Brennan into this deconstruction of the Roman lettering style and integration of street and institution.
