Robin and Jack Deters ran a successful floor-covering business together until Jack fell ill and developed blood clots. Their health insurance company claimed that Jack had a pre-existing condition and cancelled their policy, leaving them with a $42,000 hospital bill. Unable to return to work and saddled with debt, the family lost their business and ultimately their home.
