EcoFutures - Meet The Team: Aaron Dysart

June 2, 2017

Meet the team behind the Ecological Futures: Speculative Biomes of the Past, Present and Future installation for Northern Spark at TPT!

Name: Aaron Dysart
Biome: Tropical
Featured Plant: Cecropia Peltata L.

Q: What artistic medium do you practice?
A: Sculpture

Q: What was the defining moment in your life that led you to pursue a career in the arts?
A: I walked up a logging road in a cedar forest in Idaho to look for a log for class. After cutting a fallen tree into a size I could move with an axe, I looked up and saw mountain peaks and a cedar forest. I realized I was gathering school supplies doing something I would be doing anyways as my friends were reading essays and writing papers. I then wondered why I would do anything else.

Q: What is your first memory of a plant?
My mother taking a piece of an aloe plant and putting the goo on a bee sting.

Q: What was your favorite plant growing up?
A: Trees, and I am still obsessed.

Q: What interests you about the plant you selected for Northern Spark?
A: It is a pioneer plant that shoots up any chance it gets. One can turn its branches into a trumpet, and its trunk into a drum.

Q: What is the #1 piece of advice you would give to aspiring artists?
A: Make sure this is what you need to do, and if it is, keep going.

Q: What is your favorite Northern Spark memory?
A: Biking between Mia and The Walker at 3am and running in to roving gangs of delirious happy people

Q: When was the last time you stayed up until 5:26 a.m.?
A: The night of the blood moon.
