Get To Know The King Of Late Night
Quite possibly the biggest star that television has ever produced, American Masters received unprecedented access to the personal and professional archives of the King of Late Night to bring you an in depth look into the life of Johnny Carson.
The two-hour documentary American Masters: Johnny Carson will air Saturday night at 8 p.m. on tpt 2.
Carson commanded, at his peak, a nightly audience of 15 million viewers – double the current audience of Leno and Letterman – combined. Rarely giving interviews, Carson chose to remain a very private man whose public persona made him an American superstar. He once revealed, "I can get in front of an audience and be in control. I suppose it’s manipulation. Offstage, I’m aloof because I’m not very comfortable."
Interviews with family, colleagues and performers who appeared, began or were influenced by The Tonight Show illuminate his story: David Letterman, Jay Leno, Ellen DeGeneres, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Martin, Joan Rivers, Mel Brooks, Angie Dickinson, David Steinberg, Don Rickles, Carl Reiner, Doc Severinsen, and others.
