MN Original Music Special "The Lowertown Line" Featuring Trampled by Turtles and Dessa To Premiere on tpt New Year's Eve

SAINT PAUL, Minn., December 13, 2012 – Twin Cities Public Television’s award-winning weekly arts series MN Original is premiering the much-anticipated music special The Lowertown Line on December 31, 2012 at 8:30 p.m. on tpt 2.

The Lowertown Line is a unique addition for the popular arts show which features local artists and musicians often in their own studios, at local venues and around the community. By contrast, this special was recorded with a live audience at tpt’s Lowertown studios on October 24, 2012. The program is hosted by hip hop artist Dessa and features rock and bluegrass style Duluth band Trampled By Turtles, who performed and shared stories with their inspiring musical guest – Alan Sparhawk of Low, Retribution Gospel Choir and The Murder of Crows.

MN Original has always been committed to showcasing the vibrant Minnesota arts scene each week on tpt,” says Dianne Steinbach, executive producer for MN Original. “A special like The Lowertown Line, gives us the opportunity to highlight Minnesota’s world-class musicians in an interactive concert setting. And, it allows us to invite our friends from the community and fans of MN Original to the tpt studios in Lowertown to experience live local art.”

The Lowertown Line music special features a five-song set from Trampled by Turtles as well an insider Q&A hosted by Dessa about Trampled by Turtles formal training, song-writing process/style and their Duluth connections. During the set, the band also welcomed Alan Sparhawk from the Duluth band, Low to perform and Sparhawk joined Dessa and Dave Simonett in talking about his body of work, process and training.

“I was on tour when MN Original Series Producer, Ashleigh Rowe called me about hosting a new music special, and I jumped at the chance,” says The Lowertown Line host, Dessa. “Parked in a Walgreens’ lot in Chicago, I chatted excitedly with the producers, gesturing like a crazy person; the tpt team has a fresh and genuine enthusiasm for every project.”

“Bringing together Dessa, Alan Sparhawk and Trampled by Turtles and collaborating with artists of this caliber and the fabulous music they produce in Minnesota was a rare and wonderful experience,” says Ashleigh Rowe, series producer for MN Original.

The high production value consistently associated with MN Original is also on spectacular display during the music special with artistic lighting design, sweeping visuals/camera work and rustic scenic design reminiscent of an old railway station in Lowertown. Please contact Elle Krause-Lyons for more information about The Lowertown Line, including tune-in times, featured video and a future spring production of a new The Lowertown Line.
