Drury Brennan - Calligrapher

Download

Writing/Essay/Journal
Drury Brennan was wowed by the wild symmetries and colors of the graffiti art he saw as a child growing up in Los Angeles. Write about a work of art that takes your breath away. Describe what the work is, and what makes you react to it the way you do.

Activity
Drury uses graffiti-style Asian calligraphy and paints abstracted letters that sometimes he himself can’t even make out once he’s finished.

Using either the computer or with paper and pencil, try to abstract the letters in your own name to a degree that they start to look less like letters and more like art. Look up other examples of calligraphy and revisit Drury’s style for inspiration. Can you find a rhythm and poetry in the letters, as Drury does?
