Whoa. Things just got real on Sunday nights, guys. Real dark, that is!

The BBC detective drama series, The Tunnel is set against the backdrop of Europe in crisis. When a French politician is found dead on the border between the U.K. and France, detectives Karl Roebuck (Stephen Dillane, you know him from “Game of Thrones”) and Elise Wassermann (Clemence Posey, you know her from “Harry Potter”) are sent to investigate on behalf of their respective countries.

Sounds like your average procedural drama, eh?

IT IS NOT.

First off (mild spoiler alert, it happens in the first few minutes), the entire reason these two detectives are working together is that as they go to remove the body from the scene of the crime, this French politician’s body FALLS APART…right on the halfway point of the channel tunnel (between France/England). Gris–ly. And that’s just the beginning.

I’ve seen three episodes, and I can assure you and just when you think things are about as dark as they can (should?) get – they get darker… as each episode builds on one “madman’s” agenda to unveil his “five truths.” Did you see “Seven” with Brad Pitt, Gwyneth and Kevin Spacey? Yeah, it’s a gruesome mind game about “morality” like that.

With that said, however, The Tunnel (so far) it hasn’t put me off. It goes dark without going over the edge (like “The Fall” did for me right away) it’s just gruesome enough to keep the edge and keep the narrative going in a thrilling, edge-of-your seat kind of way.

True of most PBS/BBC dramas; the acting is superb, the production quality is high, the story is intelligent and complex. Ultimately, The Tunnel will give you what you love about PBS mystery series while also taking things to the next level.

When: Sundays at 9:30 p.m. starting June 19.

Where: TPT 2 or your local PBS station. (Episodes are posted online on Monday mornings.)
