Arts editor Tad Simons said of director Wendy Knox, “She’s not afraid to fail. She likes to be out where she’s uncomfortable and she’s challenging herself.” Are you a risk taker? Are you happier when you challenge yourself to do something hard with a greater risk of failure? Or do you prefer something less challenging that you know you can do well? Besides being from Minnesota, how does Knox contribute or interact with the Minnesota arts scene?

Put on your own play. Imagine you are a small theater company and have very little to spend on costumes, sets or props.

Is it harder to tell a story or put on a play without these things? Or is it easier to tell the story without all the “frills?” What are some advantages and disadvantages, benefits and challenges, of working in a “no frills” theater environment? Discuss in small groups.
