Objectives: Sally Power is a paper-marbling artist – an art form that has been utilized worldwide throughout history.  Paper marbling itself relies upon scientific principles of physics, such as gases, liquids, and the solid state of matter that gives it unique properties.  In this activity, you will create your own marbled paper using these scientific concepts.   (Activity adapted from The Kitchen Pantry Scientist – kitchenpantryscientist.com).

Tools/Resources: MN Original video clip, watercolor paper, two large flat trays (9×13 pans), 2 tsp. alum (aluminum sulfate crystals), a sponge brush, 2 tbs. cornstarch, eye dropper, tempera paint (lots of colors!), newspaper.

Activity
1) Watch the segment and discuss:

a. What is interesting about the paper marbling process?

b. What is the current state of the paint in the water? What was it previously?
