Richard Abraham – Landscape Painter

Writing/Essay/Journal
Landscape painter Richard Abraham says that it can be scary to make decisions, because they might be the wrong ones. “I could paint what I think would sell, but what if I was wrong? I’d not be selling paintings AND I’d have a bunch of paintings I don’t like.” He makes the decision to paint what he likes. When you make decisions, do you think about what could happen if your decisions turn out to be wrong? How do you weigh the decisions you make? When do you know you’ve made the right decision?

Activity
In order to show his paintings in a larger gallery, Abraham had to re-paint some of his landscapes on larger canvasses. Return to a piece of art you have created and try to re-create it on a different scale. Do you find yourself trying to copy yourself or does the new artwork have its own unique qualities?
