Martin Dosh – Multi-Instrumentalist

Writing/Essay/Journal
Martin Dosh makes his music by using looping techniques. He lays down a foundation track which repeats and then he builds the rest of the piece on top of that. His process is to build it up, break it down, and build it back up again. He says, “The thing that makes it done is a deadline… you can always do more.” When you are working on something, could you keep working on it forever? Or until you meet a deadline? Would you rather be finished with a project or keep working on it? How do you feel about deadlines? Do they make it easier or harder to complete a project? How does Dosh use his art form to create something totally unique and different? What do you think would be most challenging about this form of art?

Activity
Create a musical piece using looping techniques. If you don’t have recording capabilities, create the looping by using a different person to repeat each section of music or sound.
