Linda Christensen – Butter Carver

Writing/Essay/Journal
Linda Christensen carves butter sculptures of the Princess Kay of the Milky Way contestants at the Minnesota State Fair. The contestants must live and work on a dairy farm. Christensen comments that some of them have said that there is little glamour working on the farm, so she enjoys giving them the opportunity to be glamorous. When do you feel glamorous or sharply dressed? Do you dress up for many occasions? How does it make you feel to be dressed up? Also, what is unique about the way Christensen creates her art? Christensen talks about a journey – either a physical journey or journey of process. What are those journeys?

Activity
Using kitchen silverware and toothpicks, try to carve your own small-scale sculpture from a stick of butter. How hard is it? What are some of the challenges of working with non-traditional media?
