Download

Objectives: Oil painter Leslie Barlow explores multiculturalism, identity and the idea of “otherness” through the uses of figure and narrative elements. Explore issues of race and identity through her work.

Tools/Resources: Paper, paint, colored pencils and markers (available art supplies).

Activity

1) Watch the segment and discuss:

a. At a young age Leslie Barlow had to check a single box to define her racial identity. How did that experience start to shape her creative process?
b. Because there was no box for her, Leslie felt like she didn’t belong. Have you ever felt left out or like you didn’t belong?

i. How did or didn’t you confront that in the moment?
ii. How can we work to be more inclusive in those situations?

2) Using available supplies create a portrait highlighting something about you that is complex or has multiple sides.

a. It doesn’t have to be literal so use symbols, words or even magazine clippings to create a collage or drawing.
b. Share your work as a group and discuss your intention and process.
