Kelly Marshall – Textile Artist

Writing/Essay/Journal
Textile artist Kelly Marshall says that she used to draw out her designs by hand with colored pencil on graph paper but that now she does it on the computer, which gives her much more flexibility to play around and change colors. Do you feel that technology allows you to be more creative? Or does technology limit your creativity? Give some examples.

Activity
Kelly Marshall makes rugs using a weaving loom. Marshall says of her craft, “Everything is calculated out ahead of time, nothing is left to guesswork or whimsy.” How is this different from other types of art that are more “in the moment?” Create a piece of art that must be designed exactly before it can be created. Or simply try to create a piece of art from a design and stick as closely to the design as possible. How does this type of creating feel different?
