Writing/Essay/Journal
Gary Welton uses shapes and colors to capture the movement of dancers in his paintings. As the movement gets faster, his figurative paintings become more and more abstract.

Try to capture the movement of an activity in a poem. Make a list of all the verbs that describe the actions involved in doing a favorite activity. For example, drinking hot cocoa: sipping, stirring, mixing, heating, slurping, boiling, spilling, savoring. Then use those verbs to write a poem that captures the movement of the activity without directly describing it.

Activity
Gary uses watercolor and ink to match the fluidity of the dancers. Turn the poem you wrote into a painting. Use shapes and colors that match the verbs and actions you listed to convey an abstract rendering of the activity you described.
