Darin Back – Photographer

Writing/Essay/Journal
Darin Back creates an honesty in his photography by working quickly. This allows him to capture the smiles on his subjects’ faces while they are still real and before they have been held for artificially long periods of time. What is the relationship between time and honesty? Are things that happen more quickly more likely to be true? Is it easier for you to tell a true story of something that actually happened or for you to make one up? Which could you do on the spot? How does Back bring his personal story into his art? What do you think would be most challenging about this form of art?

Activity
Create some “speed art.” Try to create a series of pieces in a much shorter time than you usually would. For example, if you are doing figure drawing, have your model change poses every 30 seconds. How do the time limitations change the way you create your art?
