Bain Boehlke writes plays that help people “journey to the subterranean avenues of the spirit.” By creating detailed sets and nuanced characters, he distills experiences that would otherwise take a lifetime to understand. Write a Haiku in which only 17 syllables and 3 lines captures the essence of an emotion you’ve experienced.
Now summarize the emotion you wrote about with one word (for example: elation). Working in groups of three, share your words and write two haikus, one for each partner, that sum up their words. Now compare poems with one another and talk about the individual experiences behind those words.
