Kyle Fokken’s make-do aesthetic is inspired by a childhood spent re-imagining model toy creations with a little paint and a lot of creativity. The mixed-media sculptor worked initially with pottery until a shapely shoe inspired him to combine forms and materials. While other sculptors may incorporate found objects into their creations, the re-purposed pieces disappear into Fokken’s work, having been chosen for their shape or finish instead of their origins. His body of work includes the Der Fluegehund, or Flying Dog series, which combines dog forms with various vehicles, the Church series, which combines churches with tanks, airplanes and heavy machinery and the Tank series, which combines wooden shoes with World War I, World War II or modern military tanks.
