Once a figural painter, Barbara Kreft abandoned representational painting in favor of working with squares to rid her work of assumed narratives.

Once a figural painter, Barbara Kreft abandoned representational painting in favor of working with squares to rid her work of assumed narratives. These intricate, mosaic-like patterns are created completely by hand, without rulers or technology, in a labor- and time-intense process that is a nod to organic creation and a meditative escape from modern life. Hailing from Germany, Kreft has resided in the Twin Cities for over 20 years and is the recipient of numerous McKnight Fellowships and Minnesota State Arts Board Grants.
