Why TPT will not be airing School, Inc.

June 16, 2017

PBS has distributed an independently produced three-part documentary entitled School, Inc. While PBS did not include the program in its nationally distributed PBS schedule, the program was made available to stations in the public television system for local scheduling. As a bit of context, each station then reviews the program and considers independently whether or not to air the program. PBS distributes thousands of hours of programming to public television stations each year in this manner, for each local station to consider the merits and its own local scheduling needs.

Twin Cities PBS (TPT) has devoted many hours of programming this season to education issues, including a week of themed programming this past September. Our “Spotlight Education Week” featured eleven films and documentaries airing September 12-17. It presented special episodes of NOVA, FRONTLINE and PBS NEWSHOUR, a new film from POV, the premiere of TED TALKS, “The Education Revolution,” and concluded with the 5th annual AMERICAN GRADUATE DAY, a special broadcast aired statewide on TPT’s Minnesota Channel. American Graduate Day celebrated individuals and non-profit organizations dedicated to helping youth stay on track to high school graduation.

It was our programming judgment that these issues are critical policy issues, but warrant context and balance for viewers beyond what the School, Inc. programs offered.  The subject is important and complex, and although TPT will not be airing this documentary at this time we remain committed to presenting programming to help our viewers gain better understanding of these educational policy topics.
