Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. What do you know about them? You’ve likely heard their stances on political issues for months now but politics aside, what do you really know about them? Where did they grow up? How did they grow up? What were their families like? Where did they go to school? What did they study in school? What kinds of aspirations did they have earlier in life?

Through dozens of interviews with some of the people closest to them, Frontline’s acclaimed series “The Choice” digs deep into the lives of the 2016 presidential candidates. The two-hour documentary allows us to get to know these individuals not only as candidates but as people, giving us a better understanding of how they got to now and why they are running for one of the most difficult jobs in world.

As someone in her 20s, much of the documentary was a great history lesson for me and as I watched, I learned SO much. I’ll leave the nitty-gritty deets for you to see for yourself, but I do want to share a few of the interesting knowledge nuggets I gained.

Donald Trump

  • Grew up in Queens
  • Fred Trump (his father) believed in superior people and that, essentially, if two superior people reproduced, the offspring would be even more superior
  • Attended the New York Military Academy, one of the toughest boarding schools in the country—and he thrived
  • Was a star athlete and claims he could have played in the major leagues
  • Was into The Power of Positive Thinking by Normal Vincent Peale
  • Did something his father never did—broke into the Manhattan real estate scene
  • Was sued by the federal government for racial bias against minority rental applicants
  • Put a woman in charge of Trump Tower and told her “one good woman is better than ten good men”

Hillary Clinton

  • Grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois
  • Father was conservative
  • Grew up with a lot fighting in her household and without many displays of affection towards her
  • Was captain of the crossing guards in school
  • Lied to her parents about going to an anti-war protest
  • Saw Martin Luther King Jr. speak when she was 14
  • Was the first classmate selected to give a commencement address at Wellesley where she went off script after Republican Sen. Edward Brook of Massachusetts
  • Met Bill in class at Yale
  • Kept Rodham as her last name after marrying Bill, then rebranded herself after Bill lost second term governor election
  • Helped investigate Watergate scandal
  • Failed the Washington D.C. bar exam, “took it as a sign” and moved to Arkansas

And this is just from the first hour!

I found learning about both candidates fascinating and helpful. No matter where you stand on the issues, watching “The Choice 2016” will be a good choice.

Watch “The Choice 2016” on Tuesday, September 27 on PBS or stream it here.
