Harry Shepherd
At the turn of the 20th century, Harry Shepherd was one of Minnesota's most recognized photographers. Black and white clientele alike frequented his studio in the heart of downtown St. Paul. As his success grew, so did his desire to better the plight of African Americans. Through his photography and lectures, Shepherd made a name for himself in the early Twin Cities community of black activists.

Activist Art
In his free time, Shepherd studied African American history and discovered that blacks had made countless contributions to the country but often went \"unhonored, unwept and unsung.\" Determined to change that, Shepherd created a dramatic photo collage of black struggle and progress. He toured the nation with it, selling copies and giving lectures on race issues.

Fredrick McGhee
Fredrick McGhee was Minnesota's first black lawyer. His good looks, articulate speech and winning record were irresistible to the mainstream press, and his popularity gave him the connections and money he needed to finance work in politics and activism. McGhee did both with great skill, becoming co-founder of the Niagara Movement, an important predecessor to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Along with radical activist W.E.B. Dubois, McGhee co-founded a race organization that laid the groundwork for the extremely influential NAACP. Fredrick's great nephew, Yusef Mgeni, tells the story.

Organizers
Appalled by racial injustice, a small group raised enough money to send a plane full of Minnesotans to the momentous March on Washington.

State Leaders
Not only did Minnesotans participate in the March, they helped form the national committee that created it. Roy Wilkins of St. Paul's Rondo neighborhood represented the NAACP. University of Minnesota graduate Whitney Young headed the National Urban League. And, Dr. Anna Arnold Hedgeman from Anoka was the only woman present among all national organizers.

With the dream of Dr. King still ringing in their ears, the Minnesota marchers resolved to make his vision a reality by fighting for Civil Rights at home.

Renaissance Women
In between World Wars, the Harlem renaissance gave rise to a \"new kind of Negro.\" Blacks were taking pride in their brown-faced beauty, and their artistic and intellectual work flooded Manhattan. In the midst of Harlem's vibrant community, Anoka resident Anna Arnold Hedgeman and Duluthian Ethel Ray Nance plunged head-first into their careers, gaining vital connections and experiences that led to a lifetime of civil rights work.

Ethel Ray Nance
With the Harlem Renaissance in full swing, Ethel Ray Nance left Minnesota to work at the Urban League's Opportunity Magazine. The job put her face to face with artists, writers and great political figures like W.E.B. Dubois. She didn't stay in Harlem long, but her years there were a crucial springboard for later work with black colleges, leadership in the San Francisco NAACP and a role in establishing the United Nations in the late forties.

Anna Arnold Hedgeman
One of the first African Americans to graduate from Hamline University, Anna Arnold Hedgeman began a long and impressive civil rights career at the Harlem YWCA. In her lifetime, she consulted with the United Nations, became a founder of \"NOW\" - the National Organization for Women, and worked on the March on Washington's national organizing committee as the lone woman.
