Angela Davis: Education Not Incarceration
Angela Y. Davis is known internationally for her ongoing work to combat all forms of oppression. In 1969 she gained national attention for being removed from her teaching position at UCLA as a result of her social activism and membership in the Communist Party. Today Davis is a professor in the History of Consciousness department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is an accomplished author and a member of the Advisory Board of the Prison Activist Resource Center, currently working on a comparative study of women's imprisonment in the United States, Netherlands, and Cuba. Sponsored in part by the University of Minnesota, The Minneapolis Foundation, and General Mills Foundation, the Givens NOMMO Forum Series engages premiere African American authors and community members in critical dialogue through the experience of "nommo," a Swahili translation meaning the magic power of the word. The 2004 Forum is dedicated to April Noelle Givens, who loved literature and life.
 
The Augsburg College Advent Vespers Celebration
The Augsburg College Advent Vespers celebration is one of the largest holiday music events in the Twin Cities. Held in the beautifully renovated Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis, Augsburg College's celebration of the Advent/Christmas season combines over 300 participants; choirs, instrumentalists, readers, and a full liturgical party; and depicts through music and word the message of Christ's coming to the world.
