    Chaka Mkali educates youth through community mural projects. Duluth bluegrass band Trampled by Turtles performs at First Avenue. And the folk duo Storyhill performs in the Wabasha Street Caves.

    Painter Caitlin Karolczak is inspired by vintage medical photos and deathbed portraits. Mike Breidenbach's piping career started as an undergraduate at Macalester College where he is now the Director of Piping. Fiber artist Erica Spitzer Rasmussen creates wearable art and sculptures using tomatoes, matchsticks and human hair. Ceramicist Marko Fields employs relief printmaking techniques in his pottery. Over the years, gypsy brass band The Brass Messengers have added Dixie and Latin styles to their repertoire.

    Artistic Director Philip Brunelle founded the internationally acclaimed choral music ensemble VocalEssence in 1969. Figurative Painter Luke Hillestad, whose work is reminiscent of Italian masters, uses live models for his subjects. Composer Mary Ellen Childs incorporated clapping games and baseball coaching signals in the body percussion piece, Sight of Hand. And fDELUXE performs their funky single Gaslight at the Loring Theater.

  • #327 — Theatre in the Round + Alpha Consumer
    Theatre in the Round Players, with its community of volunteers, has been presenting work on an arena stage since 1952. More than one hundred pieces of correspondence from many of history's most notable composers make up The Gilman Ordway Manuscript Collection at The Schubert Club. Installation artist Harriet Bart transforms words and everyday objects into sculptural expressions of memory. And Jeremy Ylvisaker, Michael Lewis and J.T. Bates of Alpha Consumer perform.

    Frank Gaard has painted provocative and political themes since the 1960s. Creative nonfiction writer Barry Borich reads an excerpt from her book Apocalypse Darling. Amy Toscani's fanciful sculptures are reminiscent of arts and craft projects of childhood. Bulgarian for "orchestra without a name," Orkestar Bez Ime performs in the southeastern European tradition.

    Dominique Serrand and Steven Epp from the Tony award-winning Theatre de la Jeune Lune present The MovingCompany's first show. Twins Janani and Jeyani Narayan play Carnatic violin, a form of classical south Indian music. Fine art photographer Michael Crouser's work includes an ongoing series of timeless black and white images. And the high-energy percussive dance and musical ensemble Rhythmic Circus performs their song Circus.

    Mixed Blood Theatre's artistic director, Jack Reuler, is revolutionizing theater in the Twin Cities with his radical hospitality initiative. Visual artist and amateur ecologist Kate Casanova unearths unique intersections between art and the natural world. Russian contemporary artist Oleg Vassiliev explores memory and light in his paintings. Infusing modern pop with a retro 70's rock vibe, The Shiny Lights perform "Heartbeat."

    The Mill City Summer Opera stages its inaugural production of Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, amid the Mill City Ruins in Minneapolis. Nicholas Harper's portraits, many with exaggerated features, are inspired by Byzantine and Russian iconography. Originally from Tennessee, the soulful Chastity Brown performs "Plans of Buildin'".

    Poet Dobby Gibson releases a new book of poetry with Graywolf Press, one of the nation's leading nonprofit publishers. Founder and Artistic Director Susana Di Palma introduces the American-Spanish dance company and school Zorongo Flamenco. Gary Moss' love of Minnesota and the outdoors comes through in his photorealistic landscape and wildlife paintings. And Spencer "Big Cats" Wirth-Davis honors the memory of his mother with his instrumental hip hop and R+B album.

    Jon Reischl portrays the act of remembering in his vintage-hued paintings. Using the centuries-old art of stone lithography, Faye Passow gives her eclectic drawings rich texture and complex gradation. Expressionist Bettye Olson's career spans more than 60 years and is represented in permanent collections locally and internationally. Illustrator and collage artist Colin Johnson painstakingly assembles elements for his mixed-media work. And pianist, conductor and educator Phil Mattson is recognized as one of the top vocal jazz arrangers in the country.

    Dan Corrigan shares stories about his photographs from the legendary nightclub First Avenue. Wil Natzel uses his formal training in architecture to design and create installations that challenge the expected use of a space. Eleanor McGough mimics the effects of weather in her large-scale paintings. And City Pages? 2013 Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Greg Grease, performs.

    David Bowen's installations examine the contrast between natural and mechanical systems. Liza Sylvester paints detailed watercolor and ink abstracts that are informed by profound hearing loss, which began in childhood. Drury Brennan draws upon graffiti and Asian calligraphy in his large-scale typographical improvisations. A second generation artist, Stuart Loughridge's paintings and intaglio etchings are inspired by his international travels. Plus soulful singer/songwriter and finalist on NBC's "The Voice," Nicholas David performs "Monsters Sleep" at Mancini's Char House in Saint Paul.

    Internationally acclaimed Artaria String Quartet preserves and performs classical chamber repertoire. Noted poet Robert Bly shares three of his poems from inside his private writing sanctuary.
