Hamantashen is a tri-cornered cookie often holding sweet fillings of
honey-poppy seed, prune or apricot. They're one of the traditional
sweets of Purim, a festive Jewish holiday.
But don't wait for Purim, prepare these wonderful cookies with
your family all year around!
Ingredients and Preparation
- Prepared filling choices - poppy seed, apricot, almond, or prune
- Sugar cookie dough - choose
1) your favorite recipe 2) already-prepared
refrigerated dough from the store, or 3) the following recipe:
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 stick butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 egg, beaten
- 3 tablespoons orange juice
Preparation:
- Combine all the dry ingredients and stir to blend.
- Cut in the butter until the combined mixture resembles a course
meal.
- Add the beaten egg and orange juice and mix until the dough forms.
Chill the dough.
- Set the chilled dough on the floured parchment paper, then sprinkle more flour on top of the
dough. Cover the dough with another sheet of parchment.
- Kids will love rolling the dough to 1/8 inch thick. Remove the top sheet of paper and cut shapes with a 3 inch round cookie cutter or use a tin can or drinking glass for a circle pattern.
- Dab a teaspoon of your favorite filling on the center of
each circle.
- Fold the edge of the circle inward toward the center in thirds to
form a triangle shape.
- Lightly pinch together 3 edges of the 3 joined sections of dough,
leaving a small opening in the center for the filling to peek through.
- Bake on a cookie sheet covered with a sheet of parchment paper for 20 minutes in a 400 degree oven.
- Remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack.
Dust cookies lightly with powdered sugar before serving.
Important note: Adult supervision and participation is required for this activity.
