The New Americans is a seven-hour mini-series created by Kartemquin Films, the award-winning producer of Hoop Dreams. It describes the stories of a diverse group of contemporary immigrants and refugees from Nigeria, India, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the occupied West Bank as they leave their homelands to make new lives in the United States.

The New Americans Campaign was coordinated by Active Voice, a nonprofit based in San Francisco, which uses film, companion materials, and group discussion to engage in dialogues as a catalyst for civic action, volunteerism and coalition building. Active Voice has created three modules using excerpts from the miniseries. Each module, Building Bridges, Supporting Families, and Finding Community, depicts the struggles of both immigrant and receiving communities as they learn to live together. Minnesota and seven other states have been selected as initial sites for launching the Campaign. Visit the New Americans page on the Active Voice web site for information about ordering materials related to this project.
