When he was a boy growing up in St. Paul, Cass Gilbert found focus in creativity. As a teenager, Gilbert plied his artistic abilities, and his professional ambitions, in the emerging craft of modern architecture. Cass Gilbert would go on to help redesign American architecture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Drawing heavily and creatively from architectural traditions of the past, Gilbert's wide-ranging creations include the Renaissance and Classical Revival style Minnesota Capitol building in St. Paul and the Gothic inspired Woolworth building in New York. While not as celebrated as other American architects, Cass Gilbert's work continues to stand the test of time. |

State Capitol Saturday Walking Tours: Cass Gilbert in the Capitol Month |
|
Minnesota's State Capitol is one of the Midwest's most spectacular buildings. Inspired by the White City, a ground-breaking Italian Renaissance-styled exhibit at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, architect Cass Gilbert was determined to build a state capitol building constructed in the classical style, but with all the modern conveniences of the time. The stunning result is a towering white marble dome, fluted columns, graceful arches and commanding statuary. Learn more about the free Cass Gilbert Month tours of the Minnesota State Capitol scheduled on Saturdays in January, 2006. |
