Back in the 1950s when public television in Minnesota was still a dream, educational television had a champion in the state legislature in Elmer L. Anderson. In 1960, the republican was elected governor of our state. A year later, KTCA made a special program with Andersen, in which the governor showed off his impressive private collection of Minnesota history books. Here’s a clip.

8 Governors

EIGHT living former governors. That's what Minnesota had back in 1986. And in May of that year all eight were in one place at one time at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. We had a camera there and recorded the historic event. Yeah, only seven of the governors are featured talking in this clip. C. Elmer Anderson was always a bit shy.

Playing in the Big Leagues

A new Twins stadium is in the news and that makes it a perfect opportunity to share some great old clips of Met Stadium. The Twins played their first major league game in Bloomington in April of 1961. Thanks to the KSTP news archive, we have a great clip of Governor Elmer L. Andersen throwing out the first ball at that first game. Notice how the newsies tell the Governor to do it again so they could get a better shot ... note, too, how Twins Owner Cal Griffith can't ever seem to look in the direction of the cameras.
