McCarthy's Last Stand (05/06/08)

Former Senator Eugene McCarthy and ex-governor Harold Stassen were once leading candidates for their party's presidential nomination. And both of them spent several decades running repeated campaigns after their time was past. McCarthy ran for president first in 1968 and again in 1976, 1988 and 1992. During his final campaign, a feisty McCarthy appeared on Almanac.

Pawlenty's Moment (04/30/08)

Almanac tried something different with our coverage in the 2002 governor’s race. We sat down with the candidates for governor for a revealing look at what makes them tick. They weren't allowed to talk politics, just themselves. In this clip candidate Tim Pawlenty — check out the hairstyles — and all of his siblings tell us what life event scared him, but set his future in motion.

1990 Debate (04/23/08)

Just days after the Jon Grunseth scandal broke in the 1990 campaign, Arne Carlson entered the race as a third option to Grunseth and Rudy Perpich. It was a race that featured just one televised governor's debate and it took place in the KTCA studios. It would turn out to be the most watched debate in Channel 2 history.

The Minnesota Massacre (04/16/08)

November 8, 1978 was an election night dubbed "the Minnesota Massacre" by a generation of DFLers. Republicans took over the governor's office and the two U.S. Senate seats. As the returns came in, KTCA crews were there to record the scene. Let's take a look back at this historic night.

Jesse's Final Interview (04/07/08)

The Ventura administration was a tumultuous ride. As he talked to fewer and fewer members of the media, tpt became an outlet for the outspoken governor. Many of our long and spirited one-on-one interviews were fun, but always challenging. None was more challenging than his final interview, where he announced he would not seek re-election.

Elmer's Library (04/03/08)

Back in the 1950s when public television in Minnesota was still a dream, educational television had a champion in the state legislature in Elmer L. Anderson. In 1960, the republican was elected governor of our state. A year later, KTCA made a special program with Andersen, in which the governor showed off his impressive private collection of Minnesota history books. Here’s a clip.

The Happy Warrior (03/18/08)

In 1974 Senator Hubert H. Humphrey sat down in the KTCA studios to talk about his life. In a surprisingly frank moment, Humphrey talked in personal terms about meeting his wife, Muriel. We're not quite sure that a politician could get away with this kind of talk today.

Shocking the World (03/18/08)

Few Minnesotans will ever forget election night 1998. Weeks earlier Jesse Ventura was third in the polls ... but that night he pulled off a remarkable upset in a tight three-person race and uttered the famous quote, "We shocked the world!" The after-shocks kept on coming. Here's a look at how the Jesse phenomenon came to be.

Mondale's Fjord (03/12/08)

In 1979, Walter Mondale traveled to Mundahl, Norway ... the home of his ancestors. Tagging along on the trip was KTCA. Together with Norwegian State Television, Channel 2 produced a documentary carrying the title — and we're not kidding you — Walter Mondale: There's a Fjord in Your Past. Until recently, this program was lost. But we recently uncovered it.

First Governors Debate (03/07/08)

Rudy Perpich was the governor when Almanac went on the air in 1984 ... and in 1986 he was the first governor to participate in an Almanac debate. Here's a classic debate exchange between Perpich and challenger Cal Ludeman from the campaign of 1986.
