The majority and minority leaders of the House are good. Today there was another classic Sertich-Seifert exchange on the floor. Majority Leader Tony Sertich stood up to ask Minority Leader Marty Seifert why he was surrounded by children, he recalled an Indiana Jones movie where the villain surrounds himself with children for protection (Sertich is quite a movie buff). Seifert responded that they were thinking of fleeing the state because of tax increases, women and children first. That got a laugh. Sertich quickly rejoined that Seifert's children may want to flee, but he's trying to get them more funding for their schools. That got a laugh too. These guys are doing a masterful job of bringing a good amount of levity mixed with just enough policy to keep it quotable and fun. They are so well matched. Each is smart and young, quick and experienced. And they don't seem to hate each other which can be productive. BTW, Seifert's family is at the Capitol today to celebrate his birthday, he's 35 which even he will admit surprises most people who he says think he's 45. Rep. Phyllis Kahn just stood up to add her two cents. She pointed out that at 35 Alexander the Great was already dead for 3 years and in his year of birth 1972 Prozac was introduced.

Seifert's Birthday (04/23/07)
When Marty Seifert's family joined him in the House to celebrate his 35th birthday, it led to a good-natured ribbing by Tony Sertich and some historical musing by Phyllis Kahn.

Gov & Leaders
Friday, April 20, 2007 - 4:51 pm
Tonight Almanac is really must-see TV. We'll start the show with Gov. Pawlenty live (it's amazing how much access we're getting after complaining about it a couple of weeks ago). Then House leaders will join EE and Z on the couch. More than ever I think the House is really positioning itself closer to the governor than the Senate. Today Speaker Kelliher reminded her committee chairs to tell the media about all the governor's provisions that made it into House budget bills. Recently I asked the speaker if she thought she'd be playing the roll of moderator middle sister between Pawlenty and Poge. She agreed that could be her role. The other factor in end of session negotiations (remember there's just a month left) is always personalities and baggage. Anderson-Kelliher and Pawlenty just simply get along better than Pogemiller and Pawlenty. There's a lot of bad water under the bridge with Poge and TPaw. As fellow House members Kelliher and Pawlenty generally got along. And with all the new freshmen from swing districts in the House, they are naturally in a more moderate position. Finally, a couple of interesting areas that the governor could be softening on. He laid out another way medical marijuana could pass muster, if law enforcement got behind the bill. Now that may be tough to accomplish, but it signals he's not hard core on the issue that his friend Sviggy is authoring. Also, some Dems say in talks with Pawlenty and his staff that he might be open to revenues through increased tax compliance, increasing license tabs and sales tax for transit with voter approval.
