David Gillette
Almanac: At the Capitol and
Almanac commentator
David followed an unusual path to the Capitol. After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 2001, he began his career as a freelance illustrator. Despite the long hours, David found himself spending a lot of time at the local public access studio, pursuing his “favorite hobby” of television production. In 2003, David combined his illustration and broadcast efforts and co-founded the Emmy-winning comedy series, Nate on Drums, which aired on the ABC affiliate, KSTC.TV, Channel 45.
David soon developed his signature style — a combination of spoken commentary and hand-drawn cartoons. These “Illustrated Essays” caught the attention of Twin Cities Public Television, and in 2006 David was offered a coveted commentator slot on Almanac, Minnesota’s longest-running public affairs show. Since then, David has earned back-to-back Emmy awards as the region’s best On-Air Commentator.
In 2008, David launched “How It Happens,” a weekly broadcast segment for Almanac: At the Capitol. The segment seeks to shed light on the people, places and processes that influence our civic discourse. David also hosts an online follow-up segment titled “At the Capitol: After Hours.” Look for these ‘behind-the-curtain’ segments on the Almanac: At the Capitol website.
