Emmer v. Speaker
House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher got even with Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Delano). Today in the Strib, Emmer had a commentary about the gas tax that takes effect today, April Fools' Day. He wrote "clearly the joke is on us." The piece started with Emmer quoting Kelliher:
"We are a very fiscally moderate caucus."MARGARET ANDERSON-KELLIHER, NOV. 9, 2006
So during a live debate on the House floor the speaker from her chair in front of the chamber said "Happy April Fools Day Rep. Emmer" and then she asked him "How big is your gas tank on your big hockeymobile?" Emmer quickly responded "I'm afraid if I tell you, you'll tax me more." She pressed asking "What do you drive?" Democrats and Republicans were all roaring with laughter now when Emmer admitted "If you must know I take the bus. I can't afford the gas." It was a hilarious tit for tat in what could have been a tense and defensive exchange. Emmer and Kelliher can both be vilified by their opposition, but they both have a great sense of humor. It goes to show how much of the drama up here is just sport.
