Northfield News
The progressive, intelligent, eclectic, historic community of Northfield has been in the news a lot lately. The alleged use of heroin by young people in town got lots of ink and raised lots of questions. We have been filming in Northfield for weeks now, but not on this developing and sensationalized story. We were filming a history show we've planned for more than a year. It's been interesting having a camera and crew in town the past few weeks. Some assume we're chasing the "bad" and "overblown" news, but most seemed to have heard through the grapevine that we selected Northfield to feature in our latest Almanac: Hands-On History series. One local blogger summed it up well. Anyway, it's an amazing community with not one but two outstanding higher education institutions and loads of interesting characters like the townspeople who ended Jesse James career, a leading abolitionist known as the president of the underground railroad, strong and wealthy women who helped bankroll the town founding, newspaper legend Maggie Lee and early women graduates from St. Olaf and Carleton. We just finished shooting the show and we'll show you some segments in the coming weeks on Almanac. The entire program will air this fall on tpt. It's a nice break from politics.
