With a flat budget forecast it was interesting to see lawmakers dodge to tax question this week. The governor says Democrats overpromised and have to raise taxes to fulfill expectations on the issues that got them to the dance: education, healthcare and property taxes. DFLers say they will close "loopholes" for foreign operating corporations, GOPers call that a business tax increase. Dems are also saying they can raise money through greater tax compliance. Individual members have proposed increasing taxes on sales, gas, alcohol, cosmetic surgery and more. If Democrats do decide on a whole to increase taxes I don't think we'll see it for a while, until closer to end of session. The Brain Trust has some interesting posts on the taxes debate right now from our select opinion leaders. The great unknown is how those much talked about freshman suburban moderates will vote. Many of them are from swing districts that may not want tax increases. They also have some big campaign promises to meet.
