This two hour documentary examines one of the most difficult chapters of Minnesota's history: the state's involvement in the Dakota War as the Civil War was simultaneously raging. Both of these wars, which came quickly on the heels of statehood were about race, land, and identity. And though the fallout in these arenas is still being powerfully felt today, the way in which the story of this period in Minnesota's history has been told and memorialized has changed dramatically over the last 150 years, depending on who was telling it. Our program, a mix of historical information and contemporary stories, will introduce viewers to some of the key people and events of the 1862 war, and demonstrate how this critical period in our history continues to affect Minnesotans and Dakota exiled from Minnesota many generations later. Designed to build a better understanding of historical interpretation and encourage critical thinking, the program will look at the subject through the lens of public memory. 1 hour, 56 minutes long
